Getting down to Business with Cai Cai

Now that you have been open over two years…..

Greatest success? Instagram as a marketing tool.

Greatest failure? Has been inventory, it is so hard to control myself sometimes and learn that running out of something is better than having too much :)

Greatest surprise? Just how successful the Shed has been in a short time, and it hasn’t really felt like work.

Anything you would do differently? This is hard as there are lots of little things I would do differently, but so much of that is just learning as you go.  So the answers is yes, lots of little things- back office is a struggle so maybe setting up a better system early on.

Where do you see your business in five years? I see the business being fine tuned over the years and adding men’s clothing and home goods.  I want to better define my target customer, and travel more to continue to find unique items from around the world for that audience.

Anything that bothers or worries you about the store? It’s hard not to feel vulnerable when you put yourself out there. No real worries at the moment.

Has the store affected your life outside of it? The store has had an incredible affect on my life on so many different levels.  I’m a better person to my family as I am happier, busier, and more confident as a result of the success.  I am also a more active member of the community and able to help donate to local nonprofits that support women.

when you get a kick, make sure it kicks you forward.

Does it bug your family how much time it takes up? It does not bug my family, in fact, the opposite. My kids are thrilled that I am too busy to pay attention to what they are doing, and my husband can see that I am really satistifed and proud of the Shed.

Do you have a role model? Honestly, my role model is my mother. She is humble, hardworking, kind, grateful and never feels sorry for herself.  She says when you get a kick, make sure it kicks you forward. You make your own luck with hard work and a postiitve attitude.  Learn from your mistakes, and always, always be grateful.

How have you grown personally from opening the Copper Shed? I have grown so much from opening the Shed.  I can see what I truly enjoy is being creative, and I love making videos! I also have always loved helping women and those in crisis, so much of that experience is helpful at the Shed.

What a success story!

I will be quoting Cai Cai’s mom a lot. So much to think about beyond what neat clothing you might pick up from her store. She had an idea. She formulated a plan. She pursued the plan. She opened the store. She persisted:)

Think about what it’s like to run a store like The Copper Shed. How many vendors there are for the many items she chooses to carry: clothing, outerwear, shoes (sneakers, boots, heals, espadrilles, tall boots, winter boots, short boors, flat boots, healed boots…you get the idea), jewelry, hats. Then she has to decide how many of each size she needs and the clothing companies have rules about that. They have all sorts of rules like when things can go on sale and for how much. Then there is the actual store, the look, the rent, the location. Finally, you need to hire people to work in the store, handle the taxes, PR, web site, social media. It’s a lot to keep organized, and she loves it!
