Songs have a way of acting like time capsules, don't they? Think of the songs from high school, College, "your song" with a lover. What's one of your's?
Wonderful share! I happened to read while listening to music (as I often do with my reading)…and so Janis Joplin’s, “Piece of my Heart”…many times I’ve listened (and badly sung along) and it always hits me square in the heart.
I listen to music or books when I paint. but when I write I can only have something that I have watched ten thousand times or it will be distracting. I'm better with nothing on but the act of having no noise is intimidating.
In grade school chorus we had a music teacher who would have us sing a lot of her favorite songs. The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell. Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler. The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston. All of these still hit me.
Leaving on a Jet Plane ✈️ - also a gamer time for me w parents splitting and feeling a little lost- I can remember lying on the grass in my backyard watching the planes and wishing I was on one !
I hear you and I get choked up thinking about that song. We used to play it at camp the last night and hundreds of little girls in green shorts and white t shirts would cry around a campfire in the Maine woods. I’d cry because I knew I had to go back to school.
Piano Man by Billy Joel. Not only because it’s a perfect song that tells a great story but it was the first time I saw my daughter at age 8 light up when she understood the lyrics. 🥰🙏🌺

Wow that you can read and listen to rock music is a feat in itself, Amethyst!!
I enjoy listening to music while I read and write - the intersection between your piece while listening to music was pure serendipity✨😊

And here's my contribution to the yearning discussion ... also set to music ... and legwarmers ... https://megoolders.substack.com/p/what-a-familiar-feeling

That is a sad song. Another longing song… what about when you were small?
Don’t recall. I had older sisters so I liked whatever they did.
