Oh, yes I know how disturbing it is - big fan of the Michael Powell version. Wasn’t out to be obnoxious (though it is a family trait!) - Dumbo’s Feather is a way of describing what the red shoes were in your mother’s version of the story:

I don't know, obnoxious brother in law. I'm sure this story exists, but you of all people might know...the red shoes is really really scary.
