I’ve been at a Horticulture conference all week and I’m both exhilarated and wiped.
Lots of laughs and a ton of chatting. I met cool women of all ages, generally 45-80. Life’s sweet spot for new beginnings and gardening!
Horticulture! The Shirley Meneice Conference in Chicago at the Botanic Garden. Yes, I am a big fan of gardening. I was there in my official capacity as the Horticulture Chair for my garden club. It took me a few years to get into the groove of heading the committee. My passion for native plant species and enthusiasm for attending a conferences far away from home has coincided with my kids leaving home.
Gardening is a great activity to get into when you don’t have to do big grocery shoppings and there are no more games to attend. One can get pretty attached to their plants when one’s kids have cleared out. I did refer to my seedlings I nurtured into plants this spring and summer as “my seed babies” with no irony.
I’ve always loved gardening. My earliest gardening memory is my mom’s giant rock garden at the house I lived in as a little kid with my parents. But I best remember the rock garden she created at her first house on her own when I was about seven. The house was a small white cape on a cul de sac and the yard was on an incline, perfect for rock gardening.
She and my aunt lugged rocks and planted tiny plants here and there. I’m sure I helped. It was one of dozens of projects she took up in this sleepy little house. I don’t think we lived there much more than a year or two. We moved into Boston and the gardening moved to the roof or the court yard. She has kept gardening to this day. It’s a great activity to give your kids and grandkids. Thank you, mom.
Why am I talking about the conference and gardening? Because for those of you out there looking for a new passion in midlife, gardening and garden clubs are a great way to fill time. Gardening can be done alone and in a group. You don’t need to be a part of a club, but it is a nice way to socialize and a good way to contribute to your community! Check out your local clubs and see what you think!
Anyone into gardening? Or, do you prefer another new hobby like mahjong? Tell us!
