Want to see what you missed last week? OK.
A bit of news and A Peak at the First Listicals! WSG 83
Hello, Survival Guiders!
I thought it might be a cool idea to show the Premium Post from last week so you know a bit about what I am doing and if you might want to become a Premium Subscriber. But to keep it on the level, I am adding some notes in a post script after a new pay wall and have edited out a few bits. I am probably over complicating things. This happens when you write by yourself all the time.
NEWS 🗞
I was invited to be an Honorary Fellow at The Nantucket Project representing Women’s Survival Guide! Which is a pretty amazing honor. Thank you, TNP. The work I am doing here at Women’s Survival Guide is in the spirit of what TNP is doing throughout our country in both small (neighborhood meetings) and large (The Nantucket Project) ways.
This year, the TNP gathering will be “focused on amplifying and accelerating a culture of pluralism in America, where our differences become our strength and our shared challenges become shared opportunities.” Out of many, one. Ring a bell? “E pluribus unum” Our country’s motto which was probably created to remind us what the point of it all was when we lost our way.
I will write about the experience for a future post on WSG. It starts this coming Thursday. I haven’t been on the island since 1989, and Michelle Obama, is one of the speakers…so should be interesting all around!
Welcome to the first Listicals!
Listicals are inspired by the layouts in magazines of things a super cool person can’t live without. In this case, it’s just me. But, still you may discover something new you want to try! When I do the Holiday shopping posts or the Graduation gift posts, I have these spreads in mind, for sure. Personally, I think this is a really good one!
Listicals is for Premium Readers (typically) only and here is the first one!
LISTICALS 1
Hello, lovlies. I hope you’ll enjoy the following list of a few of my favorite things.
Ecos Laundry Detergent Sheets
Personally, plastic makes me nuts. Everything that used to be in paper or cardboard is now wrapped in plastic. It’s a bummer. Also, lugging a giant container of laundry detergent is a bummer. Meet Ecos Laundry Detergent Sheets (linked to Amazon). They aren’t always easy to find but I happened upon them at the Co-op in Littleton, NH (amazing place). This box is about the same price as a jug of Tide or Mrs. Myers. Even better, this product WORKS! I am amazed. One sheet thrown in the wash and the laundry is actually clean. Ecos Laundry Detergent Sheets give them a try !
Fenchel Shades at Houzz
As an empty nester, I am looking at my home in a new way. For starters, I am actually looking at it. Oh, huh. look at the paint. It’s chipped. Why didn’t I notice the broken (insert just about anything here). But, lest I forget, there is no chance of getting anyone in to redo a bathroom or anything too serious unless I’m ready to spend big bucks. And I’m not. So…lamp shades are a nifty way to change the look of a room and this lemon yellow one is $64! They come in a slew of other colors, too Fenchel Shades at Houzz enjoy!
Athletic Brewing Beer (non-alcoholic)
Please enjoy 25% off of your first order from the Athletic Brewing web site! Type in WSG25 for the discount and thank you to co-founder Bill Shufelt!
Now don’t make that face. This is not the non-alcoholic beer you drank when you were pregnant. This is really good. In fact as we make our way to a parent’s weekend we just loaded three six packs into the trunk (IPA and Golden). I am not kidding. My husband likes them too! Athletic Brewing Beer, enjoy!
WERS Radio Station
The best part about the Internet thing is that anyone can listen to a local radio station anywhere in the world. Emerson College’s radio station is the bomb. They call their style “eclecticism” and “adult urban alternative.” You might hear some crazy 80s thing from Simply Red (and what were you up to at that time, hmm? No comment). Or, some little known 60s song like Sympathy for the Devil (little known to their college listening audience). Most importantly, you’ll hear the newest alternative music at WERS Listen and enjoy!
Hudson Grace HG Tart Kumquat Dish Soap, 32 oz
This seems overkill, I know. Nice smelling dish soap? Ppphhh. Whatever. But, No! It’s amazing. My friend Katherine gave me a bottle as a thank you for something and I immediately became hooked. They do have good seasonal sales, too. It is an amazing smell and short money for a luxury. Enjoy Hudson Grace Tart Kumquat Dish Soap.
Shameless Self Promotion: Kim’s Little Women!
I started doing these little paintings of women about ten years ago as a “warm up” for my daily painting practice. They are funny and they can be poignant or weird or crazy or naked. Kind of like real women! And, that is the point. When I went back to school full time at age 44 to get my MFA at the SMFA, Tufts (a three year program full time, thank you Pel for taking up the excess slack) we did a lot of reading. Books like Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? written fifty years ago by the great Linda Lochlin, and Judy Chicago: Herstory and Nicola Tyson. Dead Letter Men.
For the first time, I saw art and its view of women by the artists painting them, who were nearly all male. Their perspective is different. Women as objects, to be viewed, and admired. Women don’t paint women the same way as men do. And, women weren’t allowed into the institutions to be taught how to paint and show their work in the great exhibits until pretty recently. So, my paintings are one woman’s view of women, as a woman. And, I also want to refute the popular belief that women are not funny. Yes, they are…look at Laura Ramoso, Amy Sedaris to name a few. Instagram is full of fabulous female comics.
So, with that background story I am doing inexpensive, accessible to most, prints of my original works. I like the idea of a whole wall of these. My daughters have urged me to start this new business. They love them and so do their friends! Perfect for dorm, apartment or giant house. I can do any size, too because it’s early days in this process. I have just started selling and the site will evolve! Enjoy Kim’s Little Women!
Deal! I will include a free 4”x6” “Bendy” print with your order of at least one print. One time only. Good from September 24-October 6, 2023! Code: WSGfree a value of $20.00!
I think that’s it for now…I hope you have enjoyed my first Listicals!!!
