First Big Ten game! Last Parent’s Weekend of a freshman in college for our family. Both are positives.
I don’t mean it wasn’t fun. It was! We met some amazing kids and their parents. Drank “Nat-y Light” beer at 10 in the morning at a frat on the waterfront in gale force winds and rain. We went to a major football game in the same weather. Were cheek to jowel with college kids in basement bars, third floor bars, street level bars. Ate Korean food. Mexican food. American food. Lost track of said freshman for quite a while. Hoped everything was OK. Found her. Asleep. Went to yet another bar. And another. Went back to the hotel…to the bar. It’s hard trying to be a college student these days as a 50 something. Keeping up with the kids is not sustainable. I am. So tired.
I try not to get too personal when writing about my life as it intersects with my family. I mean, I wouldn’t want someone writing about my private moments, would you? But, I do feel that so many of our “private” moments are the same as most people’s “private moments.” As we grow into our “mature” selves we realize this more and more and it’s a comfort.
A mom and I were talking about how much fun being in our 50s is. Why? Because we just aren’t bothered by much these days. Disgruntled, maybe. But, who cares if Suzy got the new home or Sally got a nose job? We care about feeling good. We care about our family and friends. It’s OK to care about what you look like but there is a limit to how much control anyone has over that. My mottos:
Do the best you can with what you got (sic).
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.
And I am a big believer in you make your own luck.
These are all ideas I will explore in greater detail after I recover from this weekend. Pedialyte anyone? I know a few parents who could use some!
What are some things you love to not care about these days?
Funny my first time at a Big 10 game was with my son at UMich last year. Such a blast and had many similar feelings, like why do I have to drink a Natty Light at 10 am?? (Still a better choice than the gross boxed Rose wine they try to serve the Moms.)
As far as things I love to not care about anymore - up there is whether my jeans are a size + bigger and if I'm home on a Friday night (and maybe a Sat & Sun night too). By now I know enough to appreciate even the days that are a 5/10.
Ha yes such happy memories of frat parties at Dartmouth in wind and freezing rain, but I’m from Buffalo . It seems that some things in life don’t change. So amazing to have lived through it . So glad it’s someone else ,just too exhausting. Have fun kids !
